Note too that currently if you do a search in that category, vintage items from all years (up to the 80s) are represented. There's been some discussion of this in the forums, as to whether Etsy should specify that the "antique" tag should be reserved for items 100 years old (or 80 years old or pre-1920 or whatever).
As far as I know, admin hasn't weighed in on this, and it would probably be better if a recommendation comes from the vintage community. Anybody feel strongly about this one way or the other?
I agree, and do feel strongly about this as much as the whole tagging business in general. Like anything else, it doesn't take much to add a few words to the tagging page explaining what 'antique' is, like there is for other things.
I think any person who's used to searching for antiques online would look for 'antique' to mean 100+ years, like it is in other places. There is always room for 10 years plus or minus, since that was a very prolific period, design-wise and there was a lot of overlap. In the twenties everything started looking really different, and it's easier to identify that period, but from about 1920 back to the '90s some things will be harder to date exactly.
We do need it, since anything before 1920 has nowhere to go, really. If it's not defined somewhere in the listing process, then it will be misused just as much as the word 'vintage' has (and is being misused all along, as we already know) :-(
Ida, maybe when you submit the category suggestions to HeyMichelle, you can address this issue also (or have you submitted them already?). One hundred years makes the most sense to me.
Callooh, sure I will, you know me LOL
Actually I figured at first she was going to use the suggestions everyone gave in the thread about categories, but then thought 'what if she doesn't go back and gather all that info?' and so will add it all together and send it complete. This way, she can add a few at a time, or however she does it. I will definitely mention the importance of defining both vintage and antique.
Like I said other times, the more info we provide them with ahead of time, before the site splits, the smoother it will go once we're online with less revisions and 'glitches' (hopefully, fingers crosses here :->)
